Greta Gerwig has insisted that there is no rivalry between ‘Barbie’ and ‘Oppenheimer’.
The ‘Ladybird’ director’s newest achievement finds itself competing with Christopher Nolan’s new nuclear drama ‘Oppenheimer’ when they both drop on the same day, July 21.
But Gerwig insists the two summer blockbusters, collectively known as ‘Barbenheimer’, both deserve to be seen on the big screen.
“It’s all regarding love – double it, double it once more. I think you have to see what the experience is, Barbie then Oppenheimer, Oppenheimer then Barbie. I think you have to go through all those journeys,” he said. she told The Hollywood Reporter.
Issa Rae, who plays President Barbie in Gerwig’s film, also weighed in on the box office battle, calling it “hilarious.”
“I love this togetherness where people tried to pit us once morest each other, but now it’s turning into a kind of double bill. Obviously you should see ‘Oppenheimer’ first and then cool off with ‘Barbie'” , she added.
“‘Oppenheimer’ is regarding an atomic bomb, people are going to die. I want to end my weekend, I want to have mimosas and cocktails following ‘Barbie’, I don’t want to mope. It’s just my plan , as long as you watch ‘Barbie’, I don’t care.”
The duo were speaking at the world premiere of ‘Barbie’ in Los Angeles on Sunday (09.07.23), and actress America Ferrera, who shot roller-skating scenes with Margot for the film, was also in attendance. She insisted that she was blown away by the world Gerwig created.
“It sparked a deep childhood longing for imagination, play, beauty, and I was moved, I started to cry. The world Greta created is just amazing; it’s a visionary,” she said.
