A volcano some 30 km southwest of Reykjavik has erupted
Footage released Monday followingnoon by Icelandic media shows a significant lava flow appearing to be escaping from a fault.

A volcanic eruption began Monday followingnoon in Iceland, in an uninhabited area regarding thirty kilometers from the capital Reykjavik where lava erupted for the third time in two years.
The eruption occurred around 6:40 p.m. (Swiss time) near a small mountain named Litli Hrutur, located a few kilometers from the sites of two previous eruptions which took place in 2021 and 2022 on the Reykjanes peninsula, in the southwest of Reykjavik, the Icelandic Meteorological Institute (IMO) said in a statement.
A tourist magnet
Footage broadcast live by Icelandic media, which was on standby following thousands of mini-earthquakes hit the area in recent days, shows a significant lava flow appearing to be escaping from a fault, along with smoke coming from Litli Hrutur.
“The eruption is occurring in a small depression just north of Litli Hrutur, from which smoke is billowing in a northwesterly direction,” IMO explained. Icelandic civil protection encouraged not to go there immediately, the time to assess the situation.
The effusive eruptions that have occurred so far in this area have proven to be without great danger, having caused no material damage and having had no impact on air traffic. On the other hand, they delighted the hundreds of thousands of tourists and onlookers who went to see the lava flows during the two previous eruptions, which had lasted six months and three weeks respectively.
