After Berlin and Amsterdam, it’s Paris’s turn to host TwitchCon Europe, the local version, created in 2019, of the annual Twitch convention. Some of the viewers and the main French and international streamers, like the American Pokimane, the most followed streamer on the platform, or the French Zerator, will meet on July 8 and 9 at the Parc des expositions, Porte de Versailles .
On the menu, classics of this type of convention such as signing sessions or cosplay contests, but also formats specific to Twitch and broadcast live on the platform. Among them, the Twitch Rivals, e-sport competitions involving streamers, or special events hosted by some of them.
More and more public events
This major IRL (in real life) meeting, mixing streamers and viewers, also follows a recent evolution of French and international Twitch. Streamers are indeed leaving their studios more and more to organize life-size events, in public.
The latter even sometimes take conventional forms such as that of a music festival – the Popcorn festival last year brought together 4,500 people in the town of Montcuq, or even a football match like the Eleven all stars , meeting organized by Aminematue at the Jean-Bouin stadium and opposing French and Spanish streamers in front of more than 20,000 people.
Cultivate the image of the brand
The challenge of this convention for Twitch is to materialize its online success and cultivate the image of this dominant brand. The platform indeed claims 31 million visitors on average per day. Last year, its two conventions in Amsterdam and then, three months later in San Diego, brought together 14,500 and 30,000 people respectively.
A relatively low attendance compared to other major video game events. Gamescom in Germany brought together 265,000 people last year over five days. Paris Games Week meanwhile, a traditional meeting place for video games in France, attracted 150,000 visitors over as many days. This therefore represents an average daily attendance of 53,000 and 30,000 visitors once morest a maximum of 15,000 for TwitchCon in San Diego.
High ticket prices
A potential explanatory factor for this lower attendance, the price of TwitchCon Paris tickets can prove to be prohibitive. Count 125 euros for the two days, and 75 euros the day. Paris Games Week, for comparison, offers prices at 20 euros per day for its 2023 edition, next November.
Another possible obstacle for the Parisian edition, the context of tension in France might have deterred some of the visitors, some of whom come from abroad. But, Twitch requires, the battle of numbers will also be played online, and many viewers should be there throughout the weekend. This is the spirit of this event; bind, the time of a weekend, virtual and physical.
