The Growing Risks of Member Privacy Breaches and Critical Measures to Address Them

In a context of accelerated digitalization, sports halls in Morocco are faced with a major challenge: the protection of their members’ personal data. Data privacy risks are higher than ever, with a significant increase in cyberattacks and data breaches globally. The annual study Global Digital Trust Insightsconducted by the consulting and audit firm PwCrevealed that one in four companies have suffered a data breach over the past two years, underscoring the importance of proactive security risk management.

Compliance with data protection regulations is an absolute must for gyms in Morocco. Law 09-08 relating to the protection of individuals with regard to the processing of personal data imposes strict obligations, with severe penalties in the event of non-compliance. Omar Seghrouchni, President of the Personal Data Protection Commission (CNDP) says the CNDP received a total of 1,343 data breach complaints in 2022, highlighting the need for increased vigilance.

Gyms collect and process a considerable amount of sensitive data, such as members’ health information, bank details and personal preferences. To counter these risks, gyms need to have robust security measures in place. This includes the use of sophisticated firewalls, advanced anti-virus software and intrusion detection systems.

According to the CNIL, “the breach of security is characterized by the destructionthe lossl’alterationthe disclosure unauthorized personal data transmitted, stored or otherwise processed, orunauthorized access to such data, accidentally or unlawfully.

This is any security incident, of malicious origin or not and occurring intentionally or not, having the consequence of compromising the integrity, confidentiality or availability of personal data. »

Employee awareness is also essential. They are the first people to manipulate the data. Regular training on data protection best practices and cyber risk awareness is essential to reduce human error incidents.

Gyms should also be vigilant when using external service providers for data processing. Numerous studies have demonstrated the involvement of partners or third parties with access to company systems in the data breach. Strong contracts, regular audits and thorough vendor security assessments are key measures to minimize these risks.

In conclusion, managing data protection risks in gyms in Morocco is a top priority. By complying with regulations, implementing appropriate security measures and educating their staff, gyms can maintain member privacy and ensure a safe digital environment. Collaborating with IT security experts and following industry best practices are also essential measures to counter the growing threats of cybercrime.
