Cultural Censorship in Spain: Protecting Freedom of Thought and Expression

Spain dressed in sadness, with the shawl on and the rosary in her hand; Spain of white handkerchiefs with tears in her throat, with figures in mourning on the platforms of horror saying goodbye to her children on their way to exile. Spain embezzled from NO-DO and silences, from absence of freedoms. It is to that Spain that the ultra-right brats want to push us back, as if they had a time machine; The dawn rose early, Miguel Hernández affirmed in his ‘Elegía a Ramón Sijé’ and, very soon, only a month and a half following the elections, there are already those who have taken off their mask to throw themselves into the mountains and, in every political space where they have possibility of deciding, they have started cultural censorship. It is enough to look at the geography of shame to realize the seriousness of the matter: Getafe or Valdemorillo in Madrid, Briviesca in Burgos, Cantabria, Asturias, the Balearic Islands…. The victims so far have been Lope de Vega, Virginia Woolf, Disney films or the independent productions of creators for whom the governing councils have suddenly run out of “budget”. Because censorship is always the first thing that hits and at Vox they know it; surely they will have warned you that, as Woolf affirmed, there is no barrier, lock or bolt that can be imposed on the freedom of the mind, as long as it can be exercised; That is why they seek to prevent people from thinking, to put a gag to protect their unique thought from the implicit will to make – once more– lists of prohibited authors, of clandestine creators, like when in the fifties you had to buy Lorca’s collections of poems, of Alberti or Machado in the back rooms of bookstores and hide them well.

This for the ultramontanes, if nobody stops them, is as good a start as any to start their crusade with Abascal at the forefront. Because, mind you: it’s not a Netflix or HBO movie that we can stop whenever we want. We are seeing the real life that will condition our future. And we, a majority of Spaniards, the children and grandchildren of those who lost the war (because in this country almost all of them lost the war, although some a little more than others), when we perceive dangerous behavior patterns whose consequences are warned by the History books, we have the obligation to refresh our memory; Faced with those who cheer on the reactionaries from their stands, we should say, serenely, like Quevedo: “I will not keep quiet even with my finger, / already touching the mouth or already the forehead, / silence warn or threaten fear.” No one should forget so much suffering as our grandparents or our mothers told us softly while the followingnoon retreated and in their pupils we perceived that there was room for two immense lakes loaded with absences, spilled blood or unfading pain as a result of a fratricidal struggle. That country in black and white, red and blue, cannot be this, thanks to the fact that they built democracy with generosity. Our Spain is sensible, peaceful, diverse from heterodox thought so that we all fit, forged by force of harmony and respect. That is why they will fail trying to kill what Virginia Woolf or Lope mean, for example. Great artists are eternity transcended, while mediocre politicians who betray their noble occupation of service to the country are a mistake that can be corrected by voting freely.
