Johannes Huber: Burning witches was never “normal” for the church

Vienna (OTS) – The prominent Viennese theologian and doctor Prof. DDr. Johannes Huber today criticized statements by Vice Chancellor Werner Kogler (Green Party) that witch burnings were once normal for the church. “Historical research has long since shown that witch burnings were caused more by pressure from the population, who wanted to get rid of those who thought differently or who were competitors,” said Huber. “The church rejected this and tried to prevent it. Significantly, there was not a single execution for witchcraft in the entire Papal States.” In this context, Huber referred to the renowned German historian Volker Reinhardt: “If Kogler is going to argue with the church, he should at least do some reading beforehand,” said Huber. A better example would have been the Green Party’s culture shift related to pedophilia. Huber: “In the 1970s, the German Greens still demanded impunity.”
