In the black and white photo, the two women pose temple to temple, gently leaning on each other and supporting each other. They have their eyes closed and their mouths closed, because following fifty years of living together, they recognize each other without seeing each other, understand each other without needing to speak to each other. In the great article that the Washington Post devoted to them, Chris Evert and Martina Navratilova look like twins. “Chris knows me better than myself,” says Martina.

Evert and Navratilova is one of the greatest rivalries in the history of sport and, between 1975 and 1986, 14 joint Grand Slam finals. “Young people, we were very good friends, we sometimes shared hotel rooms to save money. And then, when I really wanted to be better than her, this friendship became a bit awkward, Martina Navratilova told us in 2017 at Roland-Garros. We were less close for a few years before we met once more. I shared things with her that I didn’t share with anyone else.”
