From its launch at the end of 2022, the graphics card GeForce RTX 4090 from Nvidia has established itself as an exceptional GPU in terms of its performance and energy consumption (600W!).
It quickly interested overclocking fans who tried to push the hardware to its limits. During the month of November, the card with AD104 GPU was already pushed up to 3.7 GHz, well beyond its operating frequencies of 2.23 GHz / 2.5 GHz (boost), setting a new record for a graphics card.
A custom RTX 4090 with nitrogen cooling
Since then, several attempts have made it possible to climb further to more than 3.9 GHz, the latest values reaching 3,975 GHz. But was it possible to reach the symbolic bar of 4 GHz?
The challenge was attempted by overclocking specialist, Splave, using a RTX 4090 ROG Matrix from Asus not yet launched on the market and whose liquid cooling has been replaced by a liquid nitrogen cooling system.
The 4 GHz crossed!
The overclocking test finally made it possible to increase the frequency of the graphics card to 4005 MHz, a value never before achieved by a GPU. To reach this frequency, it was still necessary to provide more than 1000W of power while the GPU was kept at a temperature of -34.6 degrees Celsius.
The Videocardz site recalls that the 3 GHz barrier had been crossed with an RTX 2080 Ti under Turing architecture three years ago. The RTX 30 graphics cards under Ampere architecture had made it possible to go higher but without being able to approach 4 GHz.
It was therefore with the next generation Ada Lovelace and following 8 months of marketing the RTX 4090 that the 4 GHz border was crossed.
