Keeping internal expertise up-to-date is one of the missions that falls to human resources professionals. The American professional social network LinkedIn looked into the question through a study on in-company training. Its authors surveyed 1,200 training professionals and 2,100 learners around the world to identify best practices. Five channels are particularly favored by trainers to best identify needs.

1 – Inventory of skills

74% of trainers surveyed say they use or implement a skills assessment. Quite classic, this tool nevertheless requires having established upstream a job reference system which details the skills expected for each position.

2 – Measure performance

Monitored regularly, performance indicators make it possible to quickly identify a drop in productivity within a team or an entity. On the other hand, they do not make it possible to identify the nature of the drop in speed. It is then necessary to distinguish whether the problem comes from skills to be updated or from a disengagement of the collaborators.

3 – Know the strategic issues

Taking the time to discuss with managers is useful for understanding the strategy implemented and therefore anticipating the training needs that will meet the challenges: 61% of the trainers questioned use this practice.

4 – Listen to local managers

In addition to listening to the hierarchy, 59% of training professionals also turn to local managers to collect their needs. In direct contact with all employees, this managerial stratum is best placed to synthesize the needs expressed by their teams.

5 – Monitor trends in your sector

51% of training professionals keep up to date with news from the sectors in which they operate.
