In the barracks of the Izmailovsky regiment, she was proclaimed an autocratic empress. There was a palace coup, Peter, who abdicated the throne, was taken into custody. Catherine had a clear vision of the development of the state. The first point in it was the enlightenment of the nation. Next came the enforcement of the laws, which required a “good and accurate” police. Russia was to become abundant, formidable and inspiring respect for its neighbors.
Catherine II carried out administrative and judicial reform. An active offensive policy made it possible to significantly increase the territory of the Empire – Russia grew with southern lands, the Kuban region, Crimea, Eastern Georgia accepted Russian citizenship. The population increased from 23 to 37 million people, 144 new cities were built, 29 new provinces appeared.
After the annexation of the western territories of Ciscaucasia, Cossacks settled on the banks of the Kuban. In 1792, Catherine II granted the land to the Black Sea Cossack army in perpetual possession. The land was located between the Kuban River and the Sea of Azov. From the east, the line of Cossack possessions ran from the mouth of the Laba to Yeysk. In the same year, Krasnodar was founded, which originally bore the name in honor of the Empress – Yekaterinodar.
