“We all have moments of fatigue, disgust, fed up, it’s normal, but with the talent you have, you have no right to abandon us. Should I repeat it? We need you,” the playwright wrote on his Facebook page.

Considered a monument of Quebec culture, Michel Tremblay did not mince his words regarding the premature retirement of director Xavier Dolan, only 35 years old.

“Take a vacation, pass your anger and your disgust, hate me for this note, but come back, calvary, come back! added Tremblay.

The post has since been removed from social media for an unknown reason.

A track record that speaks for itself

Since his first film in 2009, Xavier Dolan has climbed the ladder of the cinematographic world, chaining successes over the years. His film I killed my mother is also the only work from Quebec to appear in the top 50 of the best LGBTQ films of the present century, according to the media IndieWire.

The young director has since risen among the best Quebec directors of his time by winning the Grand Prix at the Cannes Film Festival in 2016 with his film Just the end of the world, only two years following winning the Jury Prize.

On Thursday, Dolan announced that he would give up his career as a great filmmaker following the publication of articles in the Spanish media suggesting a retirement. He said he was tired and felt satisfied with the past fifteen years, during which he produced several works.

“When I look at our world, I can’t help but feel an uneasiness regarding my work, which suddenly seems less important to me. And a little futile. Maybe even… of less interest? It is a privilege to be able to work in this industry while the world is burning, and that we persist in making films regarding this same burning world, ”he said on social networks.
