Automating Strategic Planning and Execution: The Key to Business Strategists’ Success

Strategists believe that more strategic planning and execution activities might be automated. 79% of business strategists said technologies such as analytics, artificial intelligence (AI) and automation will be critical to their success over the next two years, according to a survey by Gartner, Inc.

Strategists stated that on average, 50% of strategic planning and execution activities might be partially or fully automated; currently, only 15% are.

The survey was conducted from October 2022 to April 2023 among 200 corporate strategists in North America, Western Europe, Asia/Pacific and Australia/New Zealand, across various business sectors. activity, depending on the turnover and the size of the company.

“Leveraging analytics and AI to make more effective and insightful strategic decisions is one of the biggest challenges, and one of the biggest opportunities, facing business strategists this year. “said David Akers, research director at Gartner. “For years, strategists have been telling their companies: If you want to stay competitive and efficient, you have to go digital. Today, they seem ready to apply that advice to their own workflows.”

While most business strategists reported using descriptive and diagnostic analytics, less than half said they used more advanced tools such as predictive, prescriptive, or graphical analytics. Similarly, only 20% of strategists said they use AI-related tools, such as machine learning or natural language processing, as part of their job. However, a large percentage of strategists said they were piloting these tools or exploring potential uses. For example, 51% said they were studying machine learning and 45% did the same for predictive analytics.

One of the biggest hurdles to implementation is establishing a clear use case for new technologies. Fifty-two percent of strategists indicate that this is one of the top three challenges – the most chosen answer.

“There are several reasons for this,” Mr. Akers said. “Strategists are faced with an unfamiliar vendor market, they have too many options to choose from and few precedents to rely on.”

Much of the advanced technology that strategists have said they want to implement is already being used successfully elsewhere. To build a strong case, Gartner recommends first matching existing functionality to specific needs, then thinking regarding how to prioritize the different use cases the advanced technology might offer by asking questions regarding the purpose, impact and suitability of new tools.
