Scouts from the Deinze region in East Flanders were attacked overnight from Friday to Saturday while attending a camp in Bouillon, in the province of Luxembourg, the mayor of the entity said on Saturday, confirming information from the Nieuwsblad.
According to the Dutch-language media, a group of hooded individuals burst into the camp on Friday evening when the young Dutch-speaking people had returned to their tents.
The Nieuwsblad evokes firecrackers, altercations and knife threats. The mayor of Bouillon, Patrick Adam, confirms having been informed of an incident around 2:30 am.
“A group of young people, external to the camp, came to their camp with quarrelsome intentions,” he said in a Facebook post. “The police, warned earlier, went to the scene and began their investigation”.
Descended on the scene in the company of the alderman Franck Istace, the mayor reports having seen scouts shocked by what had just happened, but no severe injuries.
“I stayed until 5:15 am to wait for the arrival of parents and a representative of the town of Deinze”, continues Patrick Adam. No longer feeling safe, the young people decided to interrupt their stay.
“We supported them by making a vehicle and premises available to them. The children arrived home safely. That’s the main thing, ”added the city councilor.
An investigation is underway to try to identify the perpetrators of the incident.
“These acts of aggression, if proven by the investigation, are regrettable, lamentable and are the work of a minority”, continues Patrick Adam, who says he is “tired by this kind of act”.
“I hope the investigation will succeed. If there is a case for prosecution, I have no doubt that justice will take up the case”.
