Tragic Incident: 44-Year-Old Italian Dies After Running Amok in Chiasso

A 44-year-old Italian man, apparently confused, ran around in Chiasso in southern Ticino on Saturday morning, armed with a knife. Once in police custody, he collapsed and later died in hospital.

The Ticino police alarm center was reported earlier in the morning that the man was running around screaming and with a knife in his hand. This was announced by the Ticino cantonal police on Saturday followingnoon.

The man also entered a shop and waved the knife around there. A patrol from the Chiasso municipal police subsequently picked up the 44-year-old.

According to a first reconstruction of the incident, the man resisted the police, who disarmed him and handcuffed him. This, although he collapsed at first. He later said he felt bad and passed out.

At a Ticino canton police station, police officers and paramedics from the local ambulance service therefore decided to take the man to the hospital. This following they had given first aid. Despite attempts to revive him, the man who lived in the area died.

An investigation has been launched into the incident. An autopsy was also ordered. In addition, video recordings of a shop where the man had temporarily stayed are evaluated.
