The Impact of Electric Scooters: Challenges and Dangers Explored by the Quebec Cycling Network Association

The entry into force of electric scooters on July 20 is not unanimous for all. The Quebec Cycling Network Association deplores the lack of communication on the part of the MTQ.

For the past two years, the Ministère des Transports du Québec and the Association des Réseaux cyclables du Québec have been working together to improve cohabitation between the various road users.

However, for the file of electric scooters, the MTQ would not have consulted the Association before the announcement of the decree, a situation strongly denounced by the members.

Faced with this entry into force, the Association of cycling networks will have to make significant changes to the development of the 3880 km of cycle paths, within a very short time.

“The increase in the number of users and the diversification of the type of users require thinking regarding new infrastructures for the future and adapting”, announces David Lecointe, president of the Association of cycling networks of Quebec.

However, the lack of funding is an aspect to consider.

The dangers of the electric scooter

A French study analyzed on five thousand patients in the Hospitals of Paris proves that accidents with electric scooters cause as much damage as those with motorcycles.

In accidents with electric scooters, 45.5% of patients end up with severe trauma, compared to 39.7% for patients in a motorcycle accident.

“10% of people died, numbers similar to cycling. That’s twice as many motorcycle accidents. The explanation is that we wear less protection when using a scooter,” explains Dr. Robert Turcotte, orthopedic surgeon.

In Quebec, wearing a helmet will be mandatory on board an electric scooter.
