The chairman of the French car manufacturer Renault is very concerned regarding the risk that China will stop supplies of rare earth metals. According to Jean-Dominique Senard, Europe does not understand well enough that this is an important strategic matter.

Senard referred to news earlier this week of Chinese export restrictions on key commodities gallium and germanium. These metals are crucial for the production of computer chips, among other things. With this move, China is stepping up its technological trade war with the West. The country is one of the major producers of rare metals.

The Renault chairman said at a conference in Aix-en-Provence that China might go even further with export restrictions, suddenly creating a huge problem for Europe. He says it even wakes him up at night. Senard thinks that the European Union has insufficiently estimated the extent of its dependence on Chinese earth metals.

Senard said there might even be some sort of war over those rare metals in the future.
