Certain periods of life, such as pregnancy, may present even more risks even if consumption remains regulated. Part of the British Medical Journal study explains that “even moderate alcohol consumption during pregnancy is associated with lower cognitive and behavioral abilities in the child.”
Teenagers between the ages of 15 and 19 are also at risk for brain developmental delay if they drink alcohol excessively. “Excessive alcohol consumption can lead to reduced neocortical volume and mild to moderate deficits in cognitive functions,” says an excerpt from the British Medical Journal study via Futura Health. After age 65, drinking alcohol may also increase the risk of brain damage according to the study.
