Prolonged Delay and Premature Deterioration of Remodeled Floors on Calle 37: Residents Demand Answers – Latest Updates

Added to the prolonged delay in the provisional delivery of the work to remodel the floors on Calle 37, between Carreras 11 and 13, was the premature deterioration of the tiles that were installed there.

A little over a week following the partial commissioning of said section was made official, the wear of such tiles is already evident.

The residents of the sector themselves assured that, with letters sent to the inspectorate and to the Bucaramanga Mayor’s Office, they denounced the case and, to date, they have not received any response.

With astonishment, the residents of the remodeling works on Calle 37, between Carreras 11 and 13, denounced that the newly installed tiles already show damage.

Luis Ignacio Forero Ávila, who lives in the El Rey building, located in the vicinity of this road, argued that “the workers take longer to make the tile coverings than they wear out.”

He, through the right of petition sent to the Secretariat of Infrastructure, requested an explanation regarding the materials that were used in the aforementioned remodeling.

As he said, “a kind of stone is being used there, supposedly brought from Malaga, Santander. We note with surprise that these tablets register serious water resistance problems; so much so that last Tuesday, July 4, they had to change several of them”.

And he added: “by observing in detail, on July 5 and 6, they have continued with the repairs. What’s more, during the early hours of yesterday, July 7, just when it rained on the city, we verified that 100 more rotten tiles appeared once more. We assume that the issue worsened with the use of people who move around the area.

What does the Municipality respond?

After hearing regarding the complaint made by the community, Iván José Vargas Cárdenas, Secretary of Infrastructure of Bucaramanga, said that “the contractor is working and is making partial deliveries of the work for the benefit of the community.”

He added that the audit “is also fully active and all the observations of the community will be attended; and if there are cobblestones that are not in good condition, the respective changes will be required.

He was emphatic in saying that “all this will be done within the observations that the works have. I, as an official, receive complaints from the community and immediately share them with the inspectorate so that they can carry out an evaluation and share their opinions with us.”

The official recalled that these works are part of the Public Space Revitalization Plan, PREP.

Carrera 11, between calles 37 and 43, next to calle 37, between carreras 11 and 12 (up to the second access gate to the San Laureano Parish), are already partially available for pedestrian traffic, while the works in all fronts.

With his intervention, 1,400 square meters of pedestrian paths have been recovered, equivalent to 560 linear meters; more than 270 square meters of green areas have also been restored and more than 2,650 square meters of public space have been repowered with better public lighting.

The bulk of these transformation works included: the undergrounding of the low-voltage, medium-voltage and public lighting electrical networks; as well as the connections to the houses and the change of the pipes: as well as the construction of the tree root containers, the installation of the new rainwater drains, poles, bollards and curbs, in addition to the conformation of the electrical boxes.

And within the works is the installation of the new lighting and the assembly of the cobblestone floor, the same one that today is questioned by the community due to the premature deterioration of these tiles.
