According to Mitchell International, the bill in the United States has increased by 38%.
The phenomenon does not spare the province of Quebec, where the bill is also increasing.
“Several factors come into play. Embedded technologies on vehicles have much higher costs than before”, he immediately gives as an example Stéphane Belisle, representative at Association des Spécialistes de Pneu & Mécanique du Québec (ASPMQ)
Not only do the parts then cost more, but the technicians must also be more trained in order to repair these different technologies.
The vehicles are also more difficult to repair than before, notes Mr. Belisle. Technicians often have to do more research to fix different cars.
Garages also face increased costs as they occasionally have to purchase new tools to work on vehicles.
Electric vehicles do not simplify things for technicians either.
“It’s more complex, it takes staff who are trained for that. Research, analysis and diagnosis, all these times are getting much longer due to the complexity of vehicles and the way they are built now,” explains Mr. Belisle.
