NASA said on Thursday that its James Webb Space Telescope had discovered the oldest supermassive black hole in the universe at the center of the CEERS 1019 galaxy, according to Anadolu News Agency.

According to the US space agency, the black hole was formed only 570 million years following the Big Bang and has a mass equivalent to 9 million times that of the sun.

“Researchers have discovered the most distant active supermassive black hole to date with the James Webb Space Telescope. The galaxy, CEERS 1019, formed just over 570 million years following the Big Bang, and its black hole is less massive than any other similar body identified in the early universe,” said NASA in a statement posted on its website.

The US space agency also said scientists “easily found” two other black holes that “are also smaller and formed between 1 and 1.1 billion years following the Big Bang.”

The James Webb Telescope has also identified 11 galaxies whose existence dates back to 470 and 675 million years following the formation of the universe.

NASA further stated that the CEERS 1019 black hole, which has been identified as the oldest to date, “is approximately 9 million times the solar mass, far less than other black holes that have existed. also in the early universe and have been detected by other telescopes”.

“These behemoths typically contain more than a billion times the mass of the sun, and they’re easier to detect because they’re much brighter,” the US space agency added.

As part of the James Webb Space Telescope’s CEERS research, infrared images and spectral data taken by the telescope were combined to map the early universe.

Observations have determined that the oldest black holes detected before the discovery in question formed following 1 billion years following the Big Bang.
