Dakar, Jul 8 (APS) – Participants in the 3rd International Conference on Water and Climate closed Friday in Fez (Morocco) reaffirmed their commitment to promote integrated water resources management (IWRM), presented as a tool adaptation to climate change.

Representatives of governments, basin organizations, donors, civil society and other research actors notably confirmed their commitment to IWRM through a so-called Fez declaration, whose APS got copy.

They thus intend to strengthen the implementation of IWRM at the basin level as a tool for adapting to climate change and an instrument for achieving the objectives of sustainable development.

The actors of this international meeting, including the Senegalese Minister in charge of Flood Prevention and Management, Issakha Diop, called for the promotion and inclusion of innovation and new technologies in favor of better knowledge and use of resources in water.

They advocated for accelerated progress towards achieving the Sustainable Development Goals to ensure water security and advocated for safeguarding groundwater to be a core priority of basin-wide action plans.

In Fez, the participants at the same time called for improving intersectoral management in order to put in place a real coherence of sectoral policies, in particular between the water, energy and food sectors, and a better governance of water-related projects.

The preservation and fight once morest pollution of water resources, the strengthening of awareness around the issue of water, the use of renewable energies in the process of water production both for the supply of drinking water and for irrigation, are among the challenges mentioned by the participants.

They therefore recommended that basin organizations commit to designing, financing and implementing ambitious IWRM projects at the level of their respective basins for sustainable development and adaptation to climate change.

The conference, co-organized by the Kingdom of Morocco, and the International Network of Basin Organizations and the World Water Council, confirmed the attachment of the actors to the Dakar Action Plan for the basins of rivers, lakes and aquifers.
