Clovibactin: A Highly Effective Antibiotic Agent with Novel Anti-Evolution Mechanism

A new antibiotic agent isolated from a rare soil bacterium, clovibactin, is proving very effective.

In addition to being very effective once morest Gram-positive bacteria such as Staphylococcus aureus, a new antibiotic agent isolated from a rare soil bacterium, clovibactin, has a novel “anti-evolution” mechanism.

Antibiotic resistance blocked

By attaching to a specific part of the bacterial lipids on the surface of the membrane, clovibactin would make the emergence of resistance to antibiotics by mutation almost impossible, reveals a pre-published study (not yet reviewed by peers) on BioRxiv and led by the University of Utrecht (Netherlands).

Teixobactin in 2015

Clovibactin is the second antibiotic isolated from a rare soil bacterium by the American biotechnology company Novobiotic following teixobactin in 2015.
