Managua: Catholic Bishop Rolando Alvarez, who was unjustly imprisoned by the dictatorial regime in Nicaragua, was imprisoned once more within two days following his release from prison. He was once more sent back to jail following the government refused to accept the condition that he should leave the country. Soon following the international media reported the news that the bishop was released from prison, the local media released the information regarding his re-incarceration.

Bishop Rolando Alvarez of the Diocese of Matagalpa was sentenced to 26 years in prison on charges of treason for his constant criticism of President Daniel Ortega.

Bishop Rolando was released from prison on July 3. Diplomatic sources have revealed that he is in the capital’s church building and talks are underway between the government and the country’s Catholic bishops. The unnamed diplomatic representative stated that moves are underway to expel the bishop from the country and if he refuses to do so, he is likely to be jailed once more. The bishop refused to leave his homeland for America without the Pope’s orders. Human rights activists said that he said that this was a decision taken in conscience before God.

Archyde.com reported that Bishop Alvarez, who was released last Monday, has taken refuge at the headquarters of the Nicaraguan Bishops’ Conference. Following this, Bishop Alvarez was forced to return to prison in a situation where the negotiations between the Nicaraguan government and the country’s church leadership on the issue of sending the bishop to the United States failed.

Bishop Alvarez, a staunch critic of President Daniel Ortega, was arrested in August 2022 on charges of treason and spreading false news. Four priests and seminary students were arrested along with him. Bishop was sentenced to 26 years in prison in February last year following they were deported to the United States but were not ready to do so. In addition, Alvarez’s citizenship and civil rights were forever revoked.

Nicaraguan news outlet El Confidential reported that the bishop is currently being held at Jorge Navarro Prison, known as ‘La Modelo’, one of the country’s oldest and most overcrowded prisons. It is a prison that houses political prisoners.

Diplomatic relations between the Nicaraguan government and the Vatican were severed following Pope Francis criticized Ortega’s government as an authoritarian regime.
