A dog became England’s first “midwife” by accompanying her owner at the time she gave birth. For her incredible heroic act, she received a national award for her work.
This is a two-year-old Staffordshire bull terrier named Belle who was trained as an assistance animal because her owner has autism and suffers from anxiety.
When Amee Tompkins went into labor, the hospital’s health staff allowed Belle to stay with her in the room throughout the entire sequence. Belle’s job is to lie next to her owner to give her the reassurance she needs.

As reported by the BBC, Belle would be the first dog in the UK to be admitted to a maternity ward. Amee Tompkins’ midwife was the one who suggested that Belle go into the hospital, as she might see how much help she offers to her human. The dog was even present during the transfer in the ambulance and in the intensive care area.

The hospital, before approving Belle’s admission, evaluated how she reacted in such a busy space and how she behaved when she sensed that her human was in pain. The dog passed the exams with flying colors, and the entire staff was amazed, Tompkins said. In addition, extra infection control measures were taken to protect the rest of the patients.

Amee told the British media that, before Belle, she did not leave her house “for months”, not even to go to the supermarket or the doctor. The young mother is proud that her partner has been rewarded for her service. In addition, she hopes that this will change people’s perceptions of this breed, which is often seen as aggressive. “With everything going on around me, she gave me something else to focus on. She is so calm and adorable, she deserves all the recognition,” she expressed.
