Led by George Springer, Whit Merrifield and an invigorated Alek Manoah from his time in the minor leagues, the Toronto Blue Jays defeated the Detroit Tigers 12-2 on Friday night.
In his first major league start since June 5, Manoah (2-7) struck out eight batters in six innings. He hadn’t won since April 5, an 11-start winless streak.
The 25-year-old right-hander spent just under a month in the minor leagues following a disastrous start to the season. In 13 starts, Manoah had maintained a 6.36 ERA. His start once morest the Tigers allowed him to lower this mark to 5.91.
“I’ve been looking forward to this start for a long time,” said Manoah, who started a Level AA game in New Hampshire on Sunday in an attempt to correct his shooting control issues. It feels good. I’m excited regarding the steps forward I’ve taken in the past month and look forward to building on them. »
Springer led the charge on the Toronto offensive side with three RBIs. The outfielder hit a productive double in the third inning and slammed a two-run homer in the fourth. The Jays took control of the game in that inning by scoring six runs.
“The offense was very good tonight,” Blue Jays manager John Schneider said. George got the ball rolling with a big home run early in the game and Whit (Merrifield) capped it off at the end. »
For his part, Merrifield gave the knockout in the ninth inning with a three-run homer. He hit Jose Cisnero’s shot in the left bleachers to collect his fifth homer of the season, his third in two games.
Kevin Kiermaier added his two cents with four hits in five at bats. Matt Vierling led the Tigers side with three singles and an RBI.
Alex Faedo (1-5) suffered the loss in his first start since June 2. He allowed seven runs in three and two-thirds innings in his return from a finger injury.
“I thought there were a lot of pros and cons,” Faedo said. I thought the first three runs were good, but the fourth came. You have to be able to contain the damage in a round like this. »
“They showed a good approach and we didn’t respond,” said Tigers player Javier Baez. We have to keep the game tight.”
The Torontonians improved their record this season to 15-5 once morest teams in the American Central Division, while the Tigers slipped to 2-15 once morest the American East teams.
