The idea of celebrating a second public holiday to commemorate the founding of the Swiss federal state is compromised. The Political Institutions Committee of the Council of States does not consider it necessary. It rejects by 10 votes once morest 1 a motion of the National.

The proposal comes from Heinz Siegenthaler (Centre/BE). He proposes making September 12 a second public holiday at the federal level to celebrate the achievements of the State introduced on September 12, 1848. But for the States Commission, a second date must not compete with the 1st August.

August 1 is the only federal holiday. It was enshrined in the Constitution following a popular vote and the population overwhelmingly adopted it, the services of Parliament said on Friday. Introducing a second national holiday would also cost the economy dearly, the commission adds.
