The President of the Republic, Macky Sall, explained on Friday that he had wanted to avoid instability in his country by not declaring earlier that he would not run for a third term in the presidential election of 2024.
On Monday, the Senegalese head of state ended several months of suspense by announcing that he would not stand for this election scheduled for February 2024. In an interview with Le Monde newspaper and published on Friday, Macky Sall said “The only reason I might have stood for re-election would be if the country had faced a serious threat to its stability. But this threat did not materialize”.

He also claimed that he was “under no pressure” to announce his decision not to seek re-election.
