TARRAGONA, Spain, June 7 /PRNewswire/ — TARRAGONA, Spain, July 7, 2023 /PRNewswire/ — PortAventura World today inaugurated PortAventura Solar, the largest self-sufficient photovoltaic installation in a resort in Spain and one of the largest of its kind in Europe. With this, the company is taking another step forward in its commitment to reducing its carbon footprint and promoting the use of renewable energy with the support of its energy partner Endesa.

The company is strengthening its commitment to the environment with the construction of one of the largest solar self-consumption systems in Europe, for which an investment of 6 million euros was made

The solar project, supported by Endesa X, Endesa’s energy services subsidiary, installed 11,102 ground-mounted solar panels over a total area of 6.4 hectares within the resort, which is the size of 9 football pitches and a third of the for will generate the energy required to operate the park.

Arturo Mas-Sardá, President of PortAventura World, stated: “The inauguration of PortAventura Solar is an important milestone in our company’s ESG strategy, which we are constantly working on and which is an absolute priority for us.”

Choni Fernández, Director of Sustainability at PortaAventura World, added: “For more than 28 years we have been actively working to meet a range of social, environmental and economic commitments that benefit everyone at our resort. The facility is our response to the ‘Energy Transition’ focus of the company’s 2022-2025 strategic sustainability plan.”

PortAventura Solar, with a capacity of 6.05 megawatt peak (MWp), will generate 10 GWh/year – equivalent to the consumption of 3,000 homes – of clean electricity, covering almost a third of the resort’s energy needs. This reduces the environmental impact and contributes to the achievement of the SDGs set by the United Nations, which includes promoting energy efficiency in organizations. The plant will prevent the release of 4,000 tons of CO² per year into the atmosphere.

The project was developed respecting a very demanding integration and landscape sustainability strategy, with the aim of reducing its visual impact and protecting the environment. The second construction phase, which is already underway, will have a capacity of 3.1 megawatt peak (MWp) and will supply an additional 5.6 GWh per year. Overall, the installation of the system required an investment of more than 8 million euros.
