According to INSEE, the unemployment in the Grand Est reached its lowest level since the first quarter of 2008 in the first quarter of 2023. In the region, 6.9% of workers are looking for a job. Unemployment fell by 0.2 points over one year. In France, unemployment stands at 7.1%, describing a similar trajectory.
The unemployment rate fell by 0.3 point in Haute-Marne and by 0.2 point in Meuse and Haut-Rhin. It increases in the Ardennes, a department where, with Aube, it is the highest in the region. Unemployment is stable in the other departments.
At the employment zone level, the trend is also stable, except in Forbach and Bar-le-Duc, where the unemployment rate fell by 0.4 and 0.3 points respectively. Forbach is the only employment zone in the region where the unemployment rate remains above 10% of the working population. Épernay and Haguenau are the employment areas where it is lowest (4.6% and 4.4%).
In the first quarter of 2023 in the Grand Est, salaried employment increased by 0.2%, a rate close to the previous quarter. It increased significantly in the merchant service sector, excluding temporary work. At the same time, temporary jobs in market services are down sharply. Temping continues to grow in the industry. The Bas-Rhin, the region’s most populous department, contributes to half of the increase in jobs (over 1,900).
Business creations, down compared to the 4th quarter of 2022, nevertheless remain at a high level with 16,000 businesses created in the region this quarter. Traditional business creations are falling back. Corporate insolvencies continue to rise at a steady pace, but remain below pre-crisis levels.
