Why Guardiola’s Influence on German Football Has Been Detrimental: Insights from Former National Player Bastian Schweinsteiger

Former national player Bastian Schweinsteiger has blamed coach Pep Guardiola for the crisis in the DFB team.

“When Pep Guardiola came to Germany, everyone thought he had to play this type of football, short passes and so on,” Schweinsteiger told Talksport. As a result, “we’ve lost a little bit of our values.”

After successful times at FC Barcelona, Guardiola took over as coach at FC Bayern in 2013. During his three years at the club, the Munich team won three championship titles, but failed in the semi-finals of each of the Champions League. Schweinsteiger, now 38, left Bayern Munich in 2015.

Meanwhile, the German national team won the 2014 World Cup with a core of Munich players around Schweinsteiger before falling into a deep crisis in 2018. At the World Cup in Qatar, the senior team failed in the group stage, just like the U21s at the European Championship recently.

“I think most other countries saw Germans as fighters who endured to the end,” Schweinsteiger analyzed. “That strength has been lost in the last seven, eight years. We’ve forgotten that. We were more focused on passing the ball nicely.” Schweinsteiger sees a “very complicated situation for the German national team and German football as a whole”.

Guardiola moved to Manchester City following his three years in Munich. After numerous national titles, he crowned his tenure last season by winning the Champions League.
