Spotify will cancel remaining App Store subscriptions

Users who still subscribe to the Spotify using a App Store as a payment method, they will have to renew their subscriptions through the service’s official website. According to the Varietythe Swedish company is sending emails to its few consumers who still maintain an active subscription by the Apple store informing that this payment method will no longer be accepted.

Although Spotify allowed subscriptions made within the app (through the App Store) for a short period — between 2014 and 2016 — the company maintained support for payments through the Apple method even when it stopped accepting new subscriptions through the store, in May 2016. Apparently, this “patience” of the service has come to an end.

In the email sent to consumers, Spotify reported that remaining App Store subscriptions will be automatically converted to the service’s free mode (with ads) at the end of the current billing period — which means that these users will have to make a new subscription if want to go back to the Premium plan.

With this measure, Spotify will ensure that these users subscribe to the service through its official website and, consequently, will be completely free of the fee charged by Apple for purchases made via the App Store.

Spotify has been openly criticizing Apple for many years, alleging that it engages in anti-competitive practices by charging a percentage of payments on competing services, while maintaining similar services (like Apple Music) without paying a penny more.

AT Varietya spokesperson for Spotify claimed that canceling subscriptions coming from the App Store will ensure the company continues to provide a consistent subscription experience for all its users.

Will anyone out there be affected by the change?
