FLORENCE, Italy, March 1, 2019 /PRNewswire/ — Andrea Abodi, Minister of Sports and Youth, also attended the awards ceremony at the Roman Theater.
Yesterday evening, more than a thousand spectators in the Roman Theater in Fiesole enthusiastically watched the grand finale of the XXVII. Edition of the Menarini International Fair Play Awards. Organized by the Menarini Fair Play Foundation, the event, which focuses on the culture of fair play and respect in sport, took place for the first time on this magnificent stage. The event focused on the winners of 2023. Internationally known sports legends who are considered shining examples of a healthy attitude towards competition – both in sport and in life.
World-class names sat in the front row of the theater in Fiesole. Both the past and present of the event were represented in the grandstands with this year’s award winners as well as many previous Menarini Fair Play Ambassadors. The importance of the award was also underscored by the presence of the Minister for Sport and Youth, Andrea Abodi, who himself received the Fair Play Menarini International Award in 2016.
“The Fair Play Menarini Awards have become a traditional event in the sporting world – a coveted award that every athlete and manager would love to receive. I still remember how delighted I was to receive the Fair Play Gesture award in 2016, for an initiative I proposed as Lega B president, in which the referee at the end of the game, showing a green card to those players who had shown a special sense of fair play.Respect, sportsmanship and social responsibility are elements that should be a natural part of everyone’s life from school on.Unfortunately This is not always the case, which is why events such as the Fair Play Awards help to put the spotlight on the values of sport, with eminent personalities acting as representatives and advocates of sport serving as a positive example to the younger generation mean a lot.The event has grown into a tradition over time, one that is repeated year following year and just keeps getting better. It clarifies the values and experiences that, in the name of loyalty and respect for the rules, are the basis of healthy competition, where overcoming the opponent goes hand in hand with personal development and the quest for constant improvement,” explained Andrea Abodi, Minister for sports and youth.
Stars from the international sports scene performed at the final act of the award ceremony, which will be broadcast on Sportitalia tonight from 9 p.m. It kicked off in football with Javier Zanetti, legendary captain and vice-president of Inter Milan, and coach Antonio Cabrini, a former Juventus regular, who presented the Paolo Rossi special “Role Model” award to commemorate the glorious victory at the World Cup 1982 with Paolo “Pablito” Rossi. The athletics flag was flown by record-breaking long-distance runner Larissa Iapichino, who won the gold medal at last June’s Golden Gala, while well-loved Olympic swimmer Massimiliano Rosolino and Paralympic swimmer Giulia Ghiretti represented the best of Italian water sports. Also on stage were two exceptional winter athletes, skier Deborah Compagnoni and biathlete Lisa Vittozzi. Not forgetting fencing star Elisa Di Francisca, volleyball coach Alessandra Campedelli, who coached the Iranian women’s national team, and NBA basketball star Luis Alberto Scola Balvoa. Tennis “lioness” Francesca Schiavone and newly appointed director of Rai Sport Jacopo Volpi, winner of the Franco Lauro Special Prize “Telling Emotions”, completed the list of inductions into the Fair Play Menarini Hall of Fame.

As part of the ceremony, moderated by Lorenzo Dallari and Rachele Sangiuliano, the musical group Neri per Caso also returned to the Fair Play Menarini stage, becoming the stars of the evening exactly 24 years following their last performance at the awards ceremony.
