High-Risk Spa Injections in New Mexico: HIV and Hepatitis Concerns

In New Mexico, in 2018, the NMDOH Department of Health investigated two cases of HIV infection among clients of the VIP Spa located at 809 Tijeras Avenue, NW Suite B, Albuquerque, who received injections between May and September 2018. The NMDOH investigation did not identify any potential exposure to HIV transmission other than injection procedures at the VIP Spa. Additional lab testing on samples from both clients indicated recent infection with the same HIV virus – increasing the likelihood that both HIV infections might result from a VIP Spa procedure.

L’inspection led by the NMDOH and the New Mexico Regulation and Licensing Department, Barbers and Cosmetologists Boardon the evening of Friday, September 7, 2018, revealed practices that may transmit blood-borne infections such as HIV, Hepatitis B and Hepatitis C to clients. The NMDOH has therefore recommended that anyone who has received a injection of platelet-rich plasma (PRP) to the face or another type of injection (Botox for example) at the VIP Spa between May and September 2018, is tested for HIV, hepatitis B and hepatitis C.

This year (2023), the NMDOH is reiterating its recommendation that anyone who has had an injection at the VIP Spa should be tested for HIV, Hepatitis B and Hepatitis C, and undergo a new test if a first test is negative. Indeed, the Infectious Diseases Bureau of the Ministry of Health received in 2023 the report of a newly diagnosed HIV infection whose only identified risk factor was having had facials at the VIP Spa in 2018.
