The number of subscribers to the new social network Threads, which was launched by the American “Meta” to compete with “Twitter”, reached 30 million subscribers a day following its appearance, with its activation in Europe being postponed for procedural reasons.
The service launched on Wednesday at 23:00 GMT in 100 countries, where it operates without ads, and poses the biggest challenge to Twitter, which is mired in a series of problems.
“Let’s get started now. Welcome to Threads,” Mark Zuckerberg, head of Meta, wrote in his first post on the new app. Within minutes, it had thousands of likes.
On Thursday, Zuckerberg confirmed, “30 million accounts have been created as of this morning. It seems like the beginning of something special, but we have a lot of work to do to build this app.”
It is noteworthy that “Threads” now includes the active accounts of international celebrities, as well as media outlets such as “The Washington Post”, “Archyde.com”, “The Economist” and platforms such as “The Hollywood Reporter”, “Vice” and “Netflix”.
Threads is the biggest challenge for Twitter, as its owner, Elon Musk, has so far succeeded in repelling any potential competitor from similar applications and sites that have emerged such as Blue Sky and Mastodon.
In his first public comment following the launch of Threads, Elon Musk considered that the new platform appears to be a “copy-paste” of the Twitter platform.
A source close to the company said that regulatory concerns would delay the launch of the app in the European Union, where Meta is subject to the new Digital Markets Act, which imposes strict rules on major internet companies.
It is clear that Zuckerberg is taking advantage of Twitter’s floundering to launch this competing product, which Meta hopes will become the preferred communication channel for celebrities, corporations and politicians.
The launch of the service came only 4 months following information regarding this project was leaked, and a few days following a new “Twitter” flop that weakened this service even more.
