In the past month, car registrations in Germany have increased significantly. The Federal Motor Transport Authority reports 246,966 new cars. That is 19.2 percent more than in May of the previous year. Commercial keepers accounted for 68.5 percent (up 28.7 percent). Private new registrations rose by 2.7 percent.
Market leader remained with a share of 17.7 percent VW. Like almost all German manufacturers, the brand recorded double-digit growth rates. Only Opel and Ford lag behind the previous year’s figures with market shares of 4.2 and 4.4 percent.
The most successful importer was once more Skoda with an increase in sales of almost a quarter. Tesla recorded the highest percentage increase with an increase of 1700 percent to a market share of 2.1 percent. Alfa Romeo and MG increased by three figures. Among foreign volume manufacturers, Dacia made the biggest leap with an increase of 56.3 percent. Fiat, Renault and Toyota, on the other hand, were unable to match the sales figures of May 2022.
The KBA assigns 29.7 percent of all newly registered vehicles to the SUV segment. Their number grew by 26.9 percent compared to the same month last year. Demand for micro and small cars and mini-vans declined. Motorhomes also didn’t sell quite as well as they did a year ago.
Almost every sixth new registration (17.3 percent) was an electric car (+46.6 percent), while interest in plug-in hybrids continued to decline following the end of the subsidy (-40.5 percent; 5.6 percent share) . Gasoline engines accounted for the largest proportion of new cars at 35.5 percent (+17.6%), while 17.6 percent of the new cars had a diesel engine (+3.6%). Gas-powered cars together accounted for 0.5 percent, with the number of LPG vehicles increasing by 88.7 percent and natural gas cars by 4.8 percent.
The average C02 emissions of all newly registered vehicles fell by 0.2 percent to 120 grams per kilometer in May. In April it was 123.3 grams. (awm)
