Understanding Logorrhea: Causes, Symptoms, and Treatments

“We often say that logorrhea is verbal diarrhea! “, notes Julie, the author of the blog Chronicle of a young shrink and clinical psychologist in the Paris region.

Indeed, logorrhea corresponds to the fact that a person has a particularly high verbal flow. Moreover, it is often difficult to interrupt it.

Another descriptive element of this symptom: the ideas are not necessarily organized. The patients concerned “will most often go from cock to donkey”.

In addition, their “thinking is considerably accelerated and as the ideas fuse in their head, it can give this impression of disjointed speech that can sometimes be difficult to understand”, specifies the psychologist.

What might this be a sign of?

“It is a so-called transdiagnostic symptom, because it can be found in several pathologies. Very often, it is associated with patients suffering from bipolar disorder in the manic phase,” explains Julie. “But logorrhea can also be found in schizophrenia, schizoaffective disorder, anxiety disorder, certain neurological disorders…”

Logorrhea is therefore not enough to make a diagnosis.

When a diagnosis of a psychiatric disorder is made, treatment with a mood-regulating treatment or an antipsychotic most often makes it possible to make the logorrhea disappear.

When this symptom is of anxiety origin, “techniques to regulate tension and anxiety may be useful,” concludes Julie.
