Las droughtslos cyclonesthe melting of glaciers and forest fires are worsening in Latin America and the Caribbean, which aggravates a “vicious circle” that accelerates the global warming in a particularly vulnerable area, warned the World Meteorological Organization (WMO) this Wednesday (07.05.2023).
The entity, which belongs to the UN, presented its report in Havana The state of the climate in Latin America and the Caribbeanin which he highlights that “extreme weather events and climatic shocks are worsening” in the region.
This is accelerating “the long-term warming trend and sea level rise.” According to WMO records, temperatures have increased by an average of 0.2 degrees Celsius per decade in the last 30 years in the region, the highest rate recorded on a global scale.
The climate crisis and recently the La Niña phenomenon are causing prolonged droughts, which lead to a drop in hydroelectric production and an increase in the use of fossil fuels, worse harvests and “unprecedented” forest fires, the organization warns.
Likewise, the melting of the region’s glaciers and cyclones and torrential rains cause flooding with serious personal and material damage.
The report “highlights the vicious cycle of increasing impacts on countries and local communities” from global warming, the WMO argues.
