Zuckerberg boasted of “five million subscriptions in the first four hours.” But the European Union has expressed concerns regarding data privacy, which has delayed its availability on the continent

Meta, the parent company of Facebook and Instagram, launched the Threads app on Wednesday, hoping it would provide a text-to-text platform to compete with Twitter. The new app is available on Apple and Android app stores in 100 countries starting at 11pm GMT.

Meta CEO Mark Zuckerberg boasted of “five million signups in the first four hours”. But the European Union has expressed concerns regarding data privacy, which has delayed its availability on the continent.

Let’s do it. Welcome to Topics, Zuckerberg’s first post on his new platform.

“It will take some time, but I think there should be a public conversation app with more than 1 billion people. Twitter has had the opportunity to do it but it’s not done. Hopefully we will do it,” said the founder of Facebook’s ambitious platform scheme.

The two tech giants have recently entered into a competitive feud, to the point of wanting to fight each other in a “cage match”. The latest move with the topics came amid several attempts by competitors to replace the famous Twitter site, following Musk’s acquisition of it sparked a lot of controversy.

The new social media platform will initially run ad-free. It offers more than two billion Instagram users ready to switch seamlessly between the two apps, giving the social media giant a head start in achieving its goal of overtaking Twitter.
