As summer and the long holidays begin, the return of the swimsuit frightens women. In question: the influence of the “perfect body”.
Like every year, many French people will take the direction of the beaches for the holidays. If enjoying the sun and playing on the beach is a joy for children, adults are a little more embarrassed. In particular, more and more of them dread the ordeal of the bathing suit.
Even if the outfit is in itself nothing embarrassing, the idea of revealing and assuming one’s body has become difficult, especially among women. The IFOP has also conducted a study on the famous “Summer Body” highlighted in the press in March. However, this perfect body for the summer puts real pressure on women. To the point that today they would be more than 7 out of 10 dislike their body.
The survey in question is visible on the Voyage avec Nous website, which worked in partnership with the IFOP.
The perception of the body in a swimsuit impacted by the age of women
As part of the survey, participants were divided by age group to determine the impact of perception in swimsuits. It appears that more than 70% of 25-34 year olds and women over 65 feel embarrassed at the idea of showing their bodies. This idea would be reinforced by the perception of relatives and the comparison with the entourage.
Among other things, this lack of confidence on the part of women is explained by the overexposure of perfect bodies in the media. Whether it’s the women’s press or social networks, society puts pressure on women to have a perfect body. In fact, the articles recommend playing sports, dieting… But if women do not achieve this supposedly perfect “Summer body”, they feel guilty and feel uncomfortable.
RIP, the “summer body”? A steamroller stands in its way: the wave of #bodypositive who advocates the acceptance of his body.

However, this can lead to dangerous behavior. In 2020, a survey revealed that more than 75% of French people ate less from June. At the time of Body Positive, this summer diktat is still very much anchored. And today, it also affects men.
A phenomenon that also affects men
If the Summer Body is often associated with women, men also suffer from the gaze of others. However, this point is rarely highlighted.
In men, it is not the fact of revealing his body that bothers. But it’s more regarding remarks made by other people, both on social networks and elsewhere. The survey reveals that 44% of men have suffered these remarks. And the figure rises to 50% when it concerns remarks from those around them.
