Speculation with regard to his succession within the government of the Wallonia-Brussels Federation (FWB) is already agitating the spirits among the liberals. The president of MR, Georges-Louis Bouchez, has already made his choice but remains very discreet regarding it. This decision would have been taken in consultation with Pierre-Yves Jeholet, Minister-President of the FWB government, and Sophie Wilmès.
Minister Valérie Glatigny resigns and announces having to undergo a medical intervention
Several personalities are cited as appearing in the MR cast. Who are we talking regarding behind the scenes?
Valentine Delwart, discreet but solid
The general opinion within the MR, it would be necessary to designate a woman from Brussels, logically. Valérie Glatigny was to play an important role in view of the future electoral campaign in Brussels. She was cited for being high on the regional list. Despite her resignation, she intends to participate in the elections of June 9, 2024. But, in the meantime, “we need a Brussels woman to replace her, slips an MR from the capital. It’s a question of balance within the party!”
If this option were indeed to be followed by Georges-Louis Bouchez, the name of Valentine Delwart stands out. Alderman in Uccle, secretary general of the MR, wife of confidence of Charles Michel for many years, she has often been cited as a minister without ever coming into the limelight.
When it was necessary to find a successor to Charles Michel as President of the MR, following his appointment as President of the European Council, Valentine Delwart had considered launching his candidacy within the framework of the internal elections. She had finally given up engaging in this battle. “It’s a high quality profile,” says a liberal observer, however. “I put a token on his name,” bets an MR deputy.
Always with the idea of propelling a young Brussels shoot, David Leisterh might also go up to the Jeholet government. President of the Brussels regional MR, group leader in the Brussels parliament, he is also very close to President Georges-Louis Bouchez. His appointment would give a boost to the capital’s MR, which is engaged in a life-and-death struggle with the other parties to obtain electoral leadership in 2024 in the Brussels Region.
Diana Nikolic, group leader at the FWB
Another name that holds the upper hand: Diana Nikolic, the current group leader in the parliament of the FWB. This Liègeoise is on the rise within the party and was already cited as one of the possible choices with a view to forming future governments following the 2024 elections (provided that the MR is still in power, of course…).
If she were to take the portfolio of Higher Education, it would give visibility to a political personality of the Ardent City. The Liège MR is not in great shape at the moment as Christine Defraigne (currently First Alderman) has announced that she will end her political career in 2024. In addition, Diana Nikolic knows the matters of the Federation well and might be quickly operational as minister. A real asset which pleads in its favor when there are only a few months left before the June 9 election…
A rural candidate?
In the “surprise” section, the name ofAnne Laffut is mentioned. Walloon deputy and member of the Wallonia-Brussels Federation, she is also mayor of Libin (Luxembourg). In addition to the fact that she knows the subjects of the FWB and that she is a “field” agent who collects many votes of preference, the “Anne Laffut” option would also give visibility to a more rural MR.
The rabbit out of the hat…
Finally, one can never exclude in this kind of speculative exercise that the governing bodies of the party pull a rabbit out of their hat by choosing a personality from civil society (a rector or rector of the superior?).
