According to CNN, the family celebrated July 4 with fireworks, even though those are banned in Montgomery County, where the family lives.
When they were done, they drowned the fireworks in a boiler filled with water, then threw the rockets in the trash.
Unfortunately, the fireworks obviously weren’t submerged in water long enough, as they eventually caught fire while they were asleep.
The occupants of the house said they first heard an explosion outside.
Investigating the source of the noise, they discovered a fire outside their home.
The fireworks first set the garbage cans ablaze, then the fire spread to nearby shrubbery and then the home, according to Montgomery County Fire Department spokesman Pete Piringer.
The fire spread around the side and back of the house and quickly reached the attic.
Three adults, a child and their pet were able to escape from the house and are safe and sound, authorities said.
A firefighter and was taken to hospital with non-life-threatening injuries, Piringer said. Firefighters brought the bulk of the blaze under control around 11:30 p.m., just over an hour following it was declared.
It is recommended to leave the fireworks in the water for 24 hours before disposing of them in the trash.
