To answer these questions, researchers studied the impact that coffee had on the nervous system in order to determine if this drink really had a stimulating effect.

In this research published on June 28, 2023, Maria Picó-Pérez and her team then sought to find out if the caffeine allowed you to feel this boost that many people seek while drinking coffee.

For that, 47 people, accustomed to drinking coffee every day, performed functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI) of the brain. One was made before to drink coffeewhile the other was made 30 minutes later. Some drank coffee, others caffeine.

Drinking coffee would be a way to boost its effectiveness

According to the findings of scientists, drink coffee, or caffeine, help consumers transition from a period of rest to a period of work.

But caffeine would not be the only cause. Indeed, the results showed that people who drink coffee were more affected than those who consume mainly caffeine.

Drinking coffee is a sensory experience

Apart from the caffeine, therefore, it would be the complete experience of drinking a cup of coffee that would help feel that boost. The warmth of the cup, the smell of roasted coffee, and its taste are associated with the start of the day… Morning coffee is so ingrained in our minds as a wake-up call that the placebo effect associated with this gesture is strong and should not be overlooked. It would therefore also contribute to make us more alert.

However, according to other researchers, the study would have significant biases since it did not include in the participants non coffee drinkers et drinkers ofdecaffeinated coffee. Moreover, fMRIs are not everything: it would also have been necessary to assess the cognitive performance of the participants in the study.
