Manama: Three Indians have been jailed in Bahrain for inducing young women to engage in prostitution with the promise of work. Two men and one woman working as restaurant managers were convicted. Apart from the punishment, they should also bear the cost of returning the victimized women to their country. They will be deported from Bahrain on completion of their sentence. Two men aged 44 and 20 and a 37-year-old woman were convicted. A 44-year-old man and a 37-year-old woman were fined 5,000 Bahraini dinars each, and a 20-year-old man was fined 2,000 Bahraini dinars.

The incident became known to the outside world when Labor Market Regulatory Authority officials arrived at a restaurant in Gudaibiya for routine inspections. They were telling the officials that the accused were forcing four young women from the country to work as waiters in the hotel.

They said they were brought here with the promise of a decent job, but following arriving here, their passports were seized and locked in an apartment owned by the hotel. Guests at the hotel were forced to talk to them in a sexual manner and to indulge their interests. Whenever they left the apartment where they were staying, the youth, one of the accused, would accompany them to ensure that they did not escape.

They were not paid even though they worked more than 12 hours a day. They told the officials that they were even given food only once a day. They also informed that whenever they did not yield to the wishes of the customers of the hotel, they had to be brutally beaten. A detailed investigation by the officials proved the allegations to be true.

The accused did not even have any records of payment of salaries, employment contracts or other legal documents to the young women. According to the records, the owner of the restaurant where the crimes took place has nine other restaurants and a hotel and tourism establishment in Bahrain. But the authorities have not released any information regarding the accused.
