The monarch received the “Honors of Scotland” – crown, scepter and sword of state – at a solemn ceremony in St. Giles Cathedral in Edinburgh on Wednesday. Charles’ eldest son William and his wife Kate, along with other members of the royal family, also attended the service.
Previously there had been a procession in the center of Edinburgh with prominent representatives from art, politics, education, society and business. Soldiers in traditional kilts marched down the cobbled Royal Mile to the music of their bagpipes. They were led by a Shetland pony named Corporal Cruachan IV, the mascot of the Royal Regiment of Scotland. The celebrations ended with an air show.
The visit of the 74-year-old monarch and his second coronation in Scotland was controversial. There were also critics of the monarchy in the roadside crowd. They held signs that read, “Not my king.” Sometimes there were clashes with the police.
