The late Major Park In-cheol, who died in a KF-16 fighter crash during night flight training 16 years ago, was resurrected as a digital human (virtual human) using artificial intelligence (AI) deepfake technology and faced his mother.
The deceased followed in the footsteps of his father, Major Park Myeong-ryeol, who died in a fighter jet accident during team spirit training in March 1984, and he also died in July 2007 while walking the path of an Air Force pilot.
On the 5th, Defense TV aired a scene where the late Major Park In-cheol, who was revived by AI, reunites with his mother, Lee Jun-shin, the director of the Veterans Recreation Center, and other people he missed in his lifetime, in the ‘Meet the late Major Park In-cheol, the military story of that day’ episode on the 5th.
Director Lee said, “I used to watch a TV program regarding a man meeting his dead wife in a virtual space, and I thought, ‘I wish I might see my In-cheol at least once like that’.” showed
After a while, when the deceased appeared on the monitor screen as a virtual human and said, “I missed you mom,” Director Lee replied, “I missed you Incheol-ah,” and shed tears.
The virtual human in the monitor was no different from the real one, as it elaborately depicted facial expressions and mouth shapes using cutting-edge AI technology.
At this event, Kim Sang-hoon and Lieutenant Colonel Lee Doo-won, who were close friends during their cadet days at the Air Force Academy, came together to share memories of the past that only they share.
Lieutenant Colonel Lee said, “The moment I called the name, it really felt like In-cheol was calling me, so I felt like I was actually meeting him.”
Lieutenant Colonel Lee Seon-mi of the Mental Power and Culture Policy Division of the Ministry of National Defense said, “I came up with this project while contemplating ways to comfort the bereaved families of servicemen who died in the line of duty and pay respect to the noble sacrifice of national heroes.”
