The constant fire of the media and the so-called experts in the cause of problem wolves is taking on more and more crusading forms. The suspicion arises that Austria denies real wild animals and predators (bears, wolves and in the future probably also the lynx) any habitat in order to subordinate everything to the extensive tourism and an agriculture that seems to be indifferent to animal and herd protection.
The farmers concerned are obviously not willing to guarantee the safety and protection of the animals entrusted to them, which would also be in line with animal welfare. Thinking regarding profit and the associated reluctance to ensure the safety of farm animals are probably also a reason for this.
Furthermore, it is incomprehensible why in the case of the problem wolf the affected farmers in turn bring politics into play and why the community of taxpayers should pay for the costs of livestock protection dogs, shepherds and the erection of fences. The farmer is an entrepreneur and therefore also in control of his own risk, but here too the motto seems to be to personalize profits, to socialize investments and risks, i.e. to pass them on to the general public.
Tourism also needs to rethink. Not all mountain peaks have to be climbed, not all valleys, alpine pastures and gorges have to be trampled down by tourism, here too consideration and reflection is appropriate.
Because one thing must be clear to all of us: the shooting and eradication of wolves and other predators is doomed to failure, due to the increase in forest area and the closure of entire areas in Austria (settlement in urban centers due to a lack of local infrastructure), nature is taking over , and I hope that no one will consider radically cutting down the Austrian forests.
A little more restraint on the part of all those involved, less blatant reporting in the media, less extravagance on the part of those affected, more objectivity and more respect for nature in all its facets would do us all good.
