London – (dpa)
An intelligence assessment issued by the British Ministry of Defense on developments in Ukraine said on Wednesday that General Sergei Surovikin, commander-in-chief of the Russian Air Force and deputy commander of Russian forces in Ukraine, has not been seen in public since the Wagner Special Group mutiny last June.
The intelligence assessment, published on the British intelligence Twitter page, stated that at the same time, the Deputy Minister of Defense, Colonel Yunus-bek Yevkurov, was notably absent from appearing in the special television interview led by the Ministry of Defense, on Monday.
The assessment noted that it was not possible to confirm reports of Surovikin’s arrest, but that the authorities were likely to question his long-standing relationship with Wagner, which dates back to his days of service in Syria since 2017.
Although Surovikin is well known in the West for his cruelty and reputation for brutality, he is one of the most respected senior officers in the Russian military, and any official sanction once morest him is likely to cause divisions.
