Storms with heavy rain caused 120 fire brigade operations in Carinthia on Tuesday evening. As the state alarm and warning center (LAWZ) announced in a broadcast, the thunderstorms, which unloaded from 6 p.m. over the central Carinthian area, brought enormous amounts of rain within a very short time. Streams burst their banks, streets and cellars were flooded. Smaller landslides and mudslides of roads also occurred.

Villach, the upper Gurktal and the municipalities of Moosburg, Magdalensberg and Poggersdorf in the Klagenfurt-Land district were particularly affected. 41 fire brigades and 650 firefighters were deployed, and the clean-up work lasted well into the night.

The police reported, for example, that roads in the municipality of Arriach (Villach-Land district), which is often affected by storms, were murrained. The Teuchen Landesstraße (L46) in Innerteuchen and several municipal roads were affected from 8 p.m. In Villach, the Ossiach line had to be closed because an underpass was flooded. Two stuck vehicles were manually pushed out of the water by firefighters.

There was water ingress in the Villach state hospital. Two buildings were affected, including the outpatient area. The fire brigade was immediately on site and pumped out the water, said a hospital spokeswoman for the APA. Patient operations were not affected, no one had to be transferred.

According to the main fire station in Villach, a defect in the rainwater drainage system may have caused water to enter three floors of a component. The “massive water damage” was repaired within three hours with six water vacuum cleaners. There was no danger for the patients, except for slight restrictions on two wards, the operation might be continued without restrictions.

The hospital was only a hotspot for the Villach fire brigades, countless emergency calls were received within a short time, according to a broadcast. In addition to the main fire station, 15 other fire departments were alerted. In addition to flooded underpasses and buildings, fallen trees and streams that threatened to burst their banks, two children had to be fetched from a stuck elevator, animals were rescued and there was a traffic accident.
