With such a pool of superstars in the current era, it’s no wonder some of them don’t get the recognition they deserve. But in the case of one player in particular, it would border on heresy to believe a famous journalist. He’s not necessarily wrong.
In an NBA where more and more talk is on the attack, it is difficult to sort out all the ultra-productive players. Behind the leading trio for the MVP race (Joel Embiid, Nikola Jokic, Giannis Antetokounmpo), it is indeed jostling with names like Jayson Tatum, Kevin Durant or even LeBron James and Stephen Curry. Inevitably, some then have no choice but to go by the wayside…
This was particularly the case for Jimmy Butler in 2022-23, he who did not participate in the All-Star Game in Salt Lake City. Author of 23 points, 6 rebounds and 5 assists on average, the Heat superstar lost to strong competition but according to John Hollinger, it should never have been the case. Former Memphis executive turned analyst for The Athleticthe latter let out a very big rant on the subject:
Jimmy Butler not estimated at its fair value?
I would say Butler is the most underrated player in the league and it’s a shame he wasn’t named an All-Star for the Eastern Conference. Butler carried a Miami team that had only two other players above a backup to a 42-37 record through Wednesday, with his career-best year on the offensive side at age 32… As always, Butler combines that with top-notch defense on the wings.

Buckets is certainly paying here for South Beach’s complicated campaign, which finds itself forced to play the Play-In (7th in the East), but also the fact that it has missed a lot of games (15 before the All-Star Break). Since then, however, he has been running at full speed and it shows, he who is essential to his family. In any case, Hollinger’s diatribe divides the fans, not at all in agreement on the 2020 Finalist.
He doesn’t take the regular season serious until following the Allstar break

This executive knows ball. It’s disgraceful

This former leader knows what he is talking regarding. It is shameful
Not as flashy as other NBA big names, Jimmy Butler paid for it with an All-Star Game miss in 2022-23. On paper, however, it is obvious that the former Bulls has what it takes to participate in the All-Star Game every year, being one of the best two-way players in the league.
