PlayStation 5 Slim launch resurfaces in Microsoft filings for FTC lawsuit.
The lawsuit between the FTC (Federal Trade Commission) and Microsoft has exposed a number of gaming industry secrets, but the launch of a PS5 Slim is certainly not one of them.
The news goes around the web and has something to seduce: Microsoft would have revealed in advance the launch of its competitor’s next console and even its price? We need to take a step back.
Microsoft reads the news like we do
All of this is in a legal document dated June 22, 2023 which has the role of bringing together the arguments of Microsoft’s lawyers in the case to dismantle the opinion of the FTC. This 74-page document therefore goes very broad to explain how the game console market integrates Nintendo well, how the market would gain in competitiveness with the takeover, why it would be better for the consumer, etc.
Two mentions of future Sony products caught the attention of some of the specialized press. First in a footnote, Microsoft states ” Sony is expected to release a portable version of the PlayStation 5 before the end of the year for less than $300 “. The firm is referring here to Project Q already unveiled by Sony, but which is far from being a portable PlayStation.
Even juicier, Microsoft also indicates that Sony ” markets a [PS5] Digital Edition at $399.99 and expected to release a PlayStation 5 Slim later this year for the same price “. So here is a legal document where not only Microsoft would be able to reveal the launch of a competing console, but also to reveal the price.
In reality, Microsoft is only relaying rumors on the subject here. Rumor has it that Sony will launch a new version of the PS5 with optional Blu-ray disc player and slimmed down design before the end of the year, and we imagine at the same price as the Digital version of its current console.
The American giant takes great care in the document never to be affirmative and to be content to speak in the conditional. At no time does Microsoft come to bring new information or credit to the rumored PS5 Slim. Moreover, it is unlikely that Sony will give this name to the console. The “Slim” PlayStation 4 replaced the first PS4 model without ever inheriting the adjective. This once more shows that Microsoft is only citing PS5 Slim rumors here, without knowledge of Sony’s confidential strategy.
Will a PS5 Slim be released at the end of the year?
It is impossible to answer this question with certainty before Sony’s announcement. We can all the same remember that the source which predicts the launch of this PS5 Slim is the same as the one which predicted Project Q, since confirmed by Sony. The track is therefore of good quality. This may also explain why Sony is currently selling off the price of the PS5 during the sales.
On the other hand, there is a certainty, Microsoft did not reveal anything with this document of the FTC. It doesn’t matter if the PS5 Slim comes out well at the end of the year or not.
